Puzzle#7: And so it begins...

Human.Nature.

Three days after I opened sign up and already a baker's dozen participants (that's 13). Confidently, I proceed to sketching. First, here is the info on the project:

Sketching

I announced that the image would be based on one of my prints, eons ago produced in large format as Oculus and later a smaller version named Fragile.

Well as you may know from previous puzzles there are some requirements for the larger images that will host participants "puzzle pieces."
First the image has to be simple, much simpler. Second, it has to span the breadth of the panels. Third, it has to be divisible into tiny blocks (tiny as in 4-6 inches in diameter).

So the process of simplifying and all that proceeds and I now have a few versions to think about. I first eliminated extra "bodies" and kept the spirit of the print. Later I thicken the lines and then I darkened the background for a different look. Lastly I added some energy earth lines.

The overall size will be 40 inches x 52 inches so I have some resizing to do. But if I divide the resulting image into 4 panels (each 19x26, size of a sheet of paper) I can easily get 15 "puzzle pieces" in each. Total 60, mission accomplished!

100 Acts of Kindness: We made it, the fun starts now!

Following your creation: 100 Acts of Kindness

New group in Facebook due to popular request! Join and follow, I will post here too, no worries.
https://www.facebook.com/groups/puzzlewoodcutprints/

Drawings to be transferred past project (City of the World print)

After transferring to blocks

Chop chop...all the pieces gone!

Project funded, now what?

Within the next couple of weeks, some administration takes place through Kickstarter. All the pledges are collected and any bumps and glitches hopefully resolved quickly. We have quite a few non-US participants which delights me to no end, and those payments take a little longer. After two weeks, I will have a final count of artists so I can start chopping the big blocks into that many puzzle pieces.

Meanwhile, back in the studio...

The precious cherry plywood blocks are cut and I am refining the drawing, will print on paper and then transfer to the big blocks. By "transfer" I mean redraw with charcoal stick first, then commit with Sharpie. Photos  very soon as I make progress.

Ways to follow all the fun

I like to post the work in progress in various places to accommodate most if not all. So here are the places you will see photos, videos and a bit of my ramblings:
This Blog: https://1000woodcuts.blogspot.com or http://1000woodcuts.com (redirects to the blog)
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/1000woodcuts
And of course, right here on Kickstarter I will continue to post updates as I have something new and wonderful to tell you. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1000woodcuts/100-acts-of-human-kindness
That's it for now, I'm getting to work! I am very grateful to all participants and supporters for joining me in the puzzle madness.

Thank you, it's working!

Thanks to everyone's efforts we are having a very hopeful mini-surge! Getting very close with roughly 12 days to go. Best way to share with your printmaking friends is directly, I'm getting some good results from direct email and messages and I really appreciate all of you enticing your friends into joining us.  I have gone a bit crazy on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and my blog but so far I haven't lost any followers due to puzzle-project-indigestion. Also, we have people helping without participating, which is very generous; that's why they call it crowdfunding!
We now have 65 backers and some artist-teams totalling 80 artists. And THAT, my fellow puzzle lovers, is enough for the project to go on whether we make funding or not in Kickstarter. More on that later as if we don't fund through Kickstarter things can get a bit messy. But don't panic! That's MY job, ha!
Bottom line...here is the Artist Official Headquarters, bookmark the page and I will direct you there when the time comes.

Onward and Upward

Always the optimist, I already bought wood! I had some left over from a past project but I ordered some brand new delicious planks of cherry plywood. For the project, this means we go on!

Sneak a peek!

Update

I am now merely 80 prints from finishing, sore and tired but extremely delighted to be nearly done. As the printing continues, I have now a good print and a good photo of all the panels and so you may, yes you may, sneak a peek at our Peace Puzzle. I am uploading a large image in 72dpi so make sure you click on the image and view at your heart's content (about 2000 pixels wide). Say it very quietly "yaaahoooooo" shhhhhh...
Peace Puzzle 2015 - 160 international artists

Remaining Tasks

As I finish printing I am also putting together the book, going faster now but there are only 24 good hours in any given day or I would be going faster yet. Oh, and I sleep too! Seriously, very close now to being completely finished. Here are the tasks remaining, each of them taking a wee bit longer to complete than to list:

-Finish printing (roughly 3 days)
-Finish image composite in high resolution and send to printshop to make posters (by weekend)
-Finish colophon/book and send to Create Space (Amazon) to proof and print (another week or soish)
-Stamp all prints with our official Peace Puzzle 2015 stamp (half day)
-Collate 160 sets (the other half)
-Wait wait wait for book and posters to arrive back to me (...)
-Mail out 160 neat packages plus the backers (non-artists) packages (roughly 4 days)
-Go hiking in the Sierras like John Muir and come back six months later enlightened, skinny and with a long beard (six months)

A dove, a wing and a team from California

I began my design as a bird wing but it is also loosely based on my sister's "angel wings," which are tatooed on her back.

Awesome images from Team Welch/Piazza, thank you for organizing!

I have always found peace in nature. This year we had the opportunity to buy a large piece of land with a beautiful pond. Standing in the middle of nature in our own home is glorious and I can't wait to come home to our frog filled lily pads.

The shape of my wooded puzzle piece influenced the subject to be carved. My title is "Eye Wish For Peace". This is my first Puzzle Print project and I'm so excited to be a part of it. What a great thing for Artists from around the world to come together. Thank you Maria for all your efforts and love for ART!

Hands, pencil prayers, a handmade journal

Carol Myers
Watervliet Michigan USA

Hi Maria, here is a little bit of "peace" for you -- I call these little drawings "Pencil Prayers" and they are my healing meditations for the world. This one popped into my hand, so it must belong to you. You are amazing, thanks for letting me play with this puzzle. Carol

"The creation of art is a peaceful endeavor.  (Or that's what I think many of us experience when we aren't busy poking holes into our fingers with the sharp objects we play with...)
And the research backs it:  A 2014 study by Bolwerk et al. looked at ten weeks of participation in visual art production versus an art evaluation group, and researchers found that those who created art had a higher level of psychological resilience (backed by both survey and fMRI data)...  In other words, the art-creating participants' capacity to handle stress improved.
My piece of the puzzle is dedicated to what most of us know all so well:  Our peaceful carvings are also carving peaceful neural connections in our brains.  We are thus better able to cope with stress and make peaceful choices and connections with others."

I worked on my peace puzzle block on July 1, 2015 – Canada Day – hence, my decision to include a Canadian flag in my design. This reminded me of a conversation I had with my grandmother many years ago. For a grade 5 project, I had to interview my grandmother about her life story, which eventually led me to ask her the question “Why did you decide to immigrate to Canada, out of all places?” My grandmother responded by saying “I had heard that Canada was a peaceful country, with more opportunities for my family.” Her response still comes to the surface my mind from time-to-time, and I am reminded of the many peaceful, gratifying experiences I have had throughout my life so far in Canada. One activity that I particularly enjoy and find comfort in is spending time outdoors with close family and friends. Whether it be going for a half-hour walk around the block with family on a nice sunny day, or having a day trip with friends by the Harbourfront, I find it very easy to find peace and joy in these simple activities in my daily life.  I am grateful to my grandparents and parents for all the work and effort they put into immigrating to such a peaceful country.

Daily dose of peace

Marcellus Brown

Simone Tippett

I’ve been thinking about the way people notch up wins and grievances in times of conflict, and the way people who are incarcerated record the days, months and years spent in captivity. Rather than record the numbers with strikes or crosses – which designate conflict and pain – I’ve changed the notches to xo’s, which mean a kiss and a hug where I live. Also, the pattern made by the xo’s looks like a giant game of tic-tac-toe, in which there are potentially no winners and losers, depending on how the game is played.

To me, peace is about a world where people participate in acts kindness, generosity and love, rather than a world that commits so many wrongs that people must keep score. Peace is also about a world where people work together, rather than against each other. Communities of kindness... not aggressors and victims, winners and losers.

Diane Cutter Corrales, New Mexico USA www.dianecutter.com

I wanted something iconic of the American West and the peace pipe came to mind.  For many Native Americans, a ceremonial smoking has traditionally been used to seal a covenant or treaty or to offer prayers in a religious ceremony.  Since it was often used at the end of negotiations with the white man, the pipe came to be known as a "peace pipe."  To this day people still use the term "smoke the peace pipe" after a major disagreement or argument is settled.

What the goodies do for me and two more peaceful images

Goodies...

I have reported that I enjoy getting all those little things with the blocks. I requested that all participating artists wrap their blocks in their local papers and for the most part, I am pleasantly greeted by art sections, headlines, comic strips, classified ads and all kinds of local flavor from all over the world. I don't read all of them cover to cover but I do spend a bit of time browsing and enjoying the similarities and differences between cities and towns the world over.

As for the goodies, I enjoy most the hand-written notes almost always heartfelt and honest and funny and warmly welcomed. I used to write letters for my father after he lost use of his right arm due to a stroke. He wanted to write his friends and would struggle with a manual typewriter I bought him, pecking until he got too frustrated. Then he would ask me to write for him but when I sat down at the typewriter or the computer he would say: "Ay no, Tata, a mano, a mano!"
So I would write "a mano" (by hand) whatever he would slowly and thoughtfully dictate to me. When his friends replied, I would take the typed letters from the mailbox, re-write them by hand, place them back in the envelope and give them to him resealed. He would then open them and say to me: "Ves? Ellos tambien escriben a mano" (See? They also write me by hand). Chuckle. Ay Papi, how I miss you...

Anyhow, thank you all for the notes and the strange and wonderful gifts of art and otherwise, wrapped in gift wrap, tucked in tiny boxes. I truly enjoy every one of them and they give me the energy I need to continue to do these projects. I much appreciate the time that goes into every carefully wrapped package and the thoughts spent choosing the tiny prints and gifts. With each one I feel loved and that's all I really need in life.

Two more peaceful gifts for everyone.

Kay Walker
Adelaide, South Australia

"When I see images of unlikely animal friendships on YouTube, those who would normally be the hunter and hunted relaxing in each others company, I am reminded of Isaiah 11:6 – “In that day the wolf and the lamb will live together, the leopard will lie down with the baby goat”
Here we are presented with an image of PEACE in the animal kingdom………….  Perhaps one day men will lay down their weapons of war and overcome hatred with love."

Andrew Stone Florence, Italy rospobio.blogspot.com

"We are too many.
Conflicts arising from the scarcity of food and water, arable land, housing and jobs are all partly caused by the competition among us for the same resources.
Peace won't likely be in our future or that of our planet unless we can stem the growth of our species. At 7 billion humans and counting,  the human population continues to rise and the increasing pressure for dwindling resources and the effects of rising temperatures, air and water pollution and habitat loss are the driving forces of the mass plant and animal extinctions that have already begun. (and Peace must embrace the lives of all of the world's living things--not just humans).

Population control starts with family planning and birth control.
Sex education and the encouragement within communities for members to have small families can all help stem or reverse the problem of human overpopulation.
Birth control is one solution and contraception (the prevention of unwanted pregnancies) is one way to reduce our numbers and is better than the alternatives of
War, Famine and epidemic Disease.
So add my small piece to the bigger puzzle.
Encourage smaller families.
Make sure women (and men) around the world have access to safe and just reproductive care. "
